Iridology, or Iris Analysis, is the simple, painless and non-invasive technique of examining the iris (the coloured part surrounding the pupil) in each eye. Each iris has a pattern of colours, textures and markings which is unique to that person, and together these features form a map, a blueprint, which gives the iridologist valuable information about the person’s inherited strengths and weaknesses and general state of wellbeing. Each part of the iris relates to a particular area or system in the body, and the genetic markings which have been passed from parents to children make it easy for the iridologist to assess the constitution of the individual.

Iris examination involves the practitioner examining the iris in each eye using illuminated lenses. Often digital photographs of the eyes are taken so that the findings can be clearly shown on a computer screen and explained to the patient.

Iris analysis is not used to directly diagnose specific diseases, but it does help in the identification of potential weaknesses often years before symptoms become apparent. Some signs within the iris together with other information gained during a consultation help in the assessment of the efficiency of various organs and body systems. This can be an extremely important aspect of iridology because many illnesses occur because of an organ or body system imbalance - for instance headaches can be the result of liver dysfunction - and iridology can reveal such causes. This makes iridology invaluable in helping to decide the best course of action to take, and also in the planning of preventative treatment.

Iris analysis falls broadly into two categories:

  • An iris assessment only.
  • An iris assessment as part of an integrated therapeutic treatment plan for example, combined with herbs, colonic hydrotherapy, nutrition, acupuncture etc.

Whichever category is relevant, iris examination should be an empowering experience with the client and the practitioner working together in a meaningful way, having first established the requirements of the patient. The objective is that the client leaves the consultation knowing themselves better and has an understanding of their choices about the factors which are likely to hinder or help their progress towards better health.

This is a particularly excellent procedure to combine with Western herbal medicine which can rebalance various body organs and systems and help to encourage and strengthen the body’s natural capacity to heal itself, although other options are always available and will depend on what is best for the individual.

Anam Cara’s Herbalist and Naturopathic Iridologist (who is a member of the Guild of Naturopathic Iridologists) says, “Natural healing embraces the fundamental truth that within each being is an innate power that supports self-healing and survival, and I use a combination of Western herbal medicine and iridology to help this process.

“Following some of nature’s laws and principles I believe that using the correct herbs for any given situation is one of the most natural means of helping the body to help itself.

“The principles of simplicity, responsibility and change form the basis of the way forward to improved health, and here iridology provides many answers: helping to find a solution closest to the truth of any situation (simplicity), helping to find ways to empower the individual to take command of their health (responsibility), and showing ways in which each individual can release old patterns in favour of newer and healthier ones (change).

“I feel the integration of these principles within the ethos of Anam Cara, with the support and expertise of other practitioners, can only benefit those who choose at this time to journey towards better health and wellbeing.”
