Pilates is a repertoire of exercises which have been modified over the years in order to work in conjunction with our modern day knowledge of the musculoskeletal system and joint mechanics. The pilates method has a large emphasis on breath work whereby the use of the entire lung capacity is encouraged to help energise the body, delivering more oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues.

This unique exercise method works by strengthening the body from the inside out. Working with both the breath and the deep abdominal and back muscles together with the pelvic floor, a ‘girdle of strength’ is created along with a realignment of the body. The core stabiliser muscles are activated during the pilates session in order to build on the body’s strength and stability.

Working from a strong core awareness, slow, controlled, flowing movements are taught and performed along with thoughtful attention to help distract the mind from the stresses and strains of our lives.

Pilates could be described as a moving meditation contributing to a sound mind as well as a profound discipline contributing towards a stronger and more flexible body.
