Holistic Centre for Body, Mind & Spirit

The Japanese word Reiki is made up of two parts: ‘rei’ meaning universal or spirit, and ‘ki’ meaning energy or force. It was developed by a Japanese monk in the early 1900s called Dr Mikao Usui as a consequence of him having achieved the experience of ‘satori’ meaning ‘enlightenment’. He attained this state of being after spending some time on Mount Kurama on a meditation retreat.

Nowadays the tradition is passed from master teachers to students, who help attune them to the reiki energy.

Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique, which uses spiritual energy to treat physical ailments without using pressure, manipulation or massage. Whilst spiritual in nature it is not a religion and it has no dogma. However, it is much more than a physical therapy. It is a holistic system for balancing, healing and harmonising all aspects of the person - mind, body, emotions and spirit - and it can be used to encourage personal and spiritual awareness and growth. Indeed Dr Mikao Usui recommended that one’s practice should contain simple, ethical ideals to promote inner peace and harmony with one’s self and others.

During a session you will remain fully clothed and typically be asked to lie on a massage table or be seated in a chair. Your practitioner may need a few moments to enter a calm state and will then place his or her hands on or near various parts of the body, including the head, torso, knees and feet. The hands will remain in each position for several minutes before moving to the next position. Most people enjoy the contact and clients receiving reiki often report feeling pleasant warmth or tingling in the area being treated. Most relax deeply and report feeling a release of tension and anxiety. It is this state of deep relaxation that allows the healing systems of the body to be free to make whatever adjustments are necessary to improve health.

Reiki can help anyone; you do not have to be ill to benefit from its calming and relaxing effect. Reiki is non-invasive and may be used alongside conventional or natural medication.

Spiritual awareness and growth at Anam Cara

Anam Cara believes that spiritual awareness and growth can bring peace and harmony into your life. It holds the philosophy that developing your spiritual self allows you to connect more fully with the wonder of life and existence, and creates in you a calm confidence and a renewed sense of purpose. We would ask, when was the last time you stopped, pulled back from life and took care of your inner being and deeper spiritual needs?

We recognise that your mind and your spirit play a central part in every aspect of your health. Indeed, every thought you have causes a physical change in your body. Logic demands, therefore, that your mind and spirit can heal your body - and we believe they can.

We are all affected by the energy pathways in our bodies and it is important to keep them free-flowing in order to stay healthy. Illness, trauma and other negative emotional experiences can disrupt the process - and this is where healing can help the body restore its natural balance.

At Anam Cara we regularly experience the extraordinary power of spiritual healing and witness the profound, organic, spontaneous and natural unfolding of the individual to more of their true and authentic selves.

In addition to the natural healing techniques of reiki we practise the Brofman Body, Mind, Mirror Healing System, psychosynthesis (psychospiritual psychotherapy), Deep Memory Process (DMP) and Pranic healing as well as running spiritual development workshops.

We also hold regular meditation groups and classes as we believe meditation plays a crucial role in spiritual development, enabling you to reach a deeper state of inner peace, personal power and genuine self-worth, as well as helping with questions of identity, purpose, meaning and values. This all helps open pathways to peace of mind and deeper happiness.
